I knew from the first day finance wasn’t for me but rather than taking a moment to think and follow my intuition, I had followed in everybody else’s footsteps.
This was the first time I tasted what it felt like “to do something with passion”.
Next, I crossed the Sahara Desert by bicycle in just over 13 days. I became a world record holder.
In 2014 we teamed up with a production company and made a 4-part TV series about this incredible experience which has been broadcast across 9 networks around the world! It's been so satisfying. During the process I went to a financial melt down and had to rough it for a while but I came out on the other end with head high. I have now raised a total of £76,000 for Azafady.
Following Kapp to Cape, lots of opportunities started to present themselves. The series was so successful that I started asking myself “What is next?”. I did a TEDx talk entitled "Making a bold decision". I started my own production company and I’m now in the process of developing 2 more series; one about adventure in the Amazon and the other is about me going to live with 4 tribes in my home country of Iran. Life is good! I managed to claim my life back before it was too late.
What advice would I give to graduates?
All I can say to you graduates...do not follow the crowd. Have a mind of your own. Take 1 year/6 months off, go travel, do something different. We are living in a competitive environment. Don’t let competition blind you and pressure come down on you so you don’t get to chose what you want to do. A few months off is nothing in a grand scheme of things. It’s your life, nobody else's.
Reza Pakravan has conquered the summit of Mount Sabalan (4,811m) while he was carrying his bike and cycled across the Himalayas, in Nepal. He’s travelled the full length of the Caspian Sea in Iran and in March 2011 he set the world record for the fastest crossing of the Sahara Desert by Bicycle. In 2013, Reza cycled the length of the planet from Nordkapp in the Arctic Circle to Cape Town (11,000miles) in record time of 102 days.
